Speed Limit

in Built Environment

A 20mph limit on the village road from main Lechlade/Burford junction, including The Gassons, B Poggs and Hazell's Lane, Rouses Lane, and to the top end of Filkins on th Burford Road by the houses.

We are aware that the 20mph speed limit can be a divisive issue but can also be a benefit when placed in the right areas. Due to this being raised and other questions we have been asked about this, we contacted the relevant authorities for further information. We feel that everyone needs to have a say in this matter and will be putting further information forward for everyone to comment on. This needs to be a village decision.

... Many thanks Lee and Rachel, but perfectly reasonable for anyone who wants to post an opinion, to get stuck in... Personally I think 20mph zones are not a very good idea more or less anywhere. Partly because cars are not designed to drive easily and efficiently at such low speeds, and partly because most people could not stick to them and therefore would henceforth probably be less likely to stick to 30mph (and higher) limits either. Thus, 20mph limits are likely to create higher rather than lower speeds. I already see this in Witney.

There is also the back-of-the-mind idea that those who so fervently support 20mph limits are mostly just being anti-car.

Oh, and the stats trotted out about injury severity at different speeds are somewhat specious, since they are both not very honest and (of course) only obtain when there is an accident in the first place!

However, that's only my view... Come on, fellow villagers: what do you think?
